White chocolate mocha recipe with real white chocolate
Jack Donnell
At a glance
Make a white chocolate mocha with espresso, milk, and chopped white chocolate. Includes melting steps, a sauce substitution, and an iced variation.
A white chocolate mocha combines espresso and milk with sweet, creamy white chocolate. Unlike a cocoa-based mocha, it does not have the same dark chocolate flavor. This home version melts chopped white chocolate into a little warm milk before adding the coffee.
Choose a chocolate that you like eating. Chips and baking bars melt differently, and the amount of sweetness already in the chocolate affects the finished drink.
White chocolate mocha recipe with real white chocolate
Yield: 1 drink · Prep: about 2 minutes · Cook/brew: about 3 minutes · Total: about 5 minutes
Use these quantities as home starting points and adjust to taste. Times are estimates; allow extra time for an espresso machine to warm up. US volume measures are approximate metric conversions.
Equipment
Espresso maker, small saucepan, whisk, knife and board for chocolate, and a 12 fl oz mug.
Ingredients
- 1 double espresso, about 2 fl oz (60 ml)
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) milk, divided
- 3/4 oz (20 g) white chocolate, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons whipped cream, optional
Instructions
- Melt gently. Place the white chocolate and 2 tablespoons of the measured milk in a small saucepan. Warm over low heat, stirring until smooth.
- Add remaining milk. Whisk in the rest of the milk gradually. Warm until steaming gently without boiling, then remove from the heat.
- Brew the coffee. Prepare the double espresso into the mug while the chocolate milk is warm.
- Combine. Pour the chocolate milk into the espresso and stir thoroughly. Top with the optional whipped cream and serve.
Tips and adjustments
Chocolate looks grainy?
Keep the heat low, chop the chocolate finely, and stir constantly while melting. A few small pieces can often be smoothed out with warm milk and whisking.
Too sweet?
Reduce the white chocolate to 15 g next time. Adding more chocolate changes both flavor and sweetness, so start with a measured adjustment.
Sauce substitution
For a bottled white chocolate sauce, begin with 1 tablespoon in place of the chopped chocolate. Follow the label for storage and adjust to taste.
Common questions
Can this be an iced drink?
Yes. Melt the chocolate with the small milk portion first, stir in the espresso, and let it stop steaming. Add the remaining cold milk and pour over a separate glass of ice.
Do I need extra sugar?
Not in this starting recipe. White chocolate already contains sugar. Taste the completed drink before adding another sweetener.
